yknow it took a meme for me to realize every member of greenday is bisexual however, i also didnt really look at pictures of the band greenday before that and like

how was this ever a question? like no shade but this group is like if danny elfman, american flavored gerard way and the “i will find you and i will kill you” guy got blasted with an emo fruitification beam and formed a band

I’m absolutely obsessed with “American flavored Gerard Way” as though Gerard Way wasn’t quite literally born in the godforsaken state of New Jersey

HES NOT BRITISH??????

OP do you live in a bubble or something?

you wish you were me living in my beautiful bubble home with my beautiful bubble wife. you wish

listening to “boulevard of broken dreams” it’s hard for me to imagine any more likely place for him to be from than new jersey

I don’t know how to tell you this but Gerard Way did not write Boulevard of Broken Dreams

Okay, I realise that like 90% of missing-corpse mysteries are really just a case of “unscrupulous funeral director cut the body up and sold it for parts, then buried an empty casket” and have nothing to do with vampires, but imagine if both of those things happened at once? Some poor med students being terrorised by a disembodied spleen, all hopping around and out for blood.

I think my favourite thing about this post is all the folks in the notes who until this moment had no idea that burial fraud is a thing.

I think Tumblr might be generally too young to remember Alistair Cooke, the British journalist who presented Masterpiece Theater on PBS. That’s what Cookie Monster (as Alistair Cookie) was parodying with Monsterpiece Theater on Sesame Street, if this looks familiar:

Anyway, when Alistair Cooke died of cancer in 2004, aged 95, his remains were a victim of burial fraud! His bones were stolen and sold!! His elderly, cancer-affected bones! Which is awful because:

  1. grave-robbing is generally frowned upon, and
  2. NOBODY WANTS A CANCER-RIDDLED BONE IMPLANT.

That part was particularly upsetting for his family - Cooke would have been completely ineligible for donation. They had to live with the knowledge that the tissue of their elderly, sick father had been stolen, but then, worse, sold for use in patients who really needed it, and who were presumably paying for clean, healthy, young-ish, consensual tissue. (But, Cooke’s daughter said, “at the same time, he would have appreciated the Dickensian nature of it.”)

Michael Mastromarino was the “Body-Snatcher” convicted of this and over 1,000 other counts of burial fraud, corpse-robbing, and other hideously medieval-sounding naughty behaviors.

Mastromarino died in 2013 at the age of 49.

Of liver and bone cancer.

Obviously the trade continues to this day but without such a bizarre narrative shape (that we know of. Yet.)

The reason I know this is because my husband was commenting on the cricketing career of one Alastair Cook, spelled differently, and I was like “Oh, like Monsterpiece Theatre!” and … well, one Wikipedia journey later I knew far too much about burial fraud.

They replace the stolen leg bones with bits of PVC for the viewing/burial, apparently!

The most annoying feeling is when ppl get something wrong on the internet but not in a way that matters enough to bother correcting it

I’ve read entire research papers on the efforts being made to improve the taste of medicines. medicines taste disgusting because most of the chemicals meds are made from trigger bitter taste receptors (I don’t know the precise reason why cuz I’m not a chemist but for whatever reason most of them do)

The reason meds are put into pill form and we make ppl take pills is cuz they taste really gross but when you have kids who can’t take pills or adults with dysphagia who can’t swallow them we go to oral formulations and they’re fucking disgusting so patients don’t adhere to them. There’s so many pharmacists trying to come up with ways to improve medicine taste but it’s really hard cuz a lot of them can be ruined if you add flavourants. That’s why flavored meds u get as a kid don’t taste like the flavor they say they taste like a lot of the time. It’s cuz it’s hard to do.

This is honestly like saying bleach tastes bad to deter kids from drinking it rather than it being just a property of bleach. The childproof lid keeps kids out of meds.

And none of this matters, the person getting this wrong is not doing any harm, literally nobody cares about this information other than me but it’s just funny to think that some scientist’s lifes work is trying to improve the taste of meds to help patients who can’t swallow pills meanwhile a bunch of ppl online who can’t help themselves but drop “fun facts” all over the place are just pretending that meds taste like that on purpose lmao

As the op I just wanna say given that I didnt provide refs you probably shouldn’t automatically trust me either. Just don’t get information from randos online. Tumblrs for posting funny monkeys not for learning anything. Go to JSTOR for that.

Totally Unsubstantiated But: Our sense of taste developed because it’s a survival skill to be able to sense and spit out poison before you swallow it, and also to be able to taste things particularly high in nutrients you want (like sugar). We sense poison and rot as gross and bitter so we spit it out, and sugar as sweet and delicious so we eat more of it. Medicine is typically just a very controlled kind of poison - the phrase “the dose makes the poison” is very much true. So our perfectly good “don’t eat poison you dumbass monkey” system is sending up signal flares and we’re ignoring it because we’ve evolved to the point where it can be wrong.
